Came across a fascinating fact today... well it was fascinating to me.
It came from a written reply from our old friend Vernon of the Coaker family.
Turns out that the minimum amount of money a child attracts from the taxpayer pot is...
(of course there are all manner of allowances that can pump this figure up)

2008-09
Primary Education £3,780 pa
Secondary Education £4,890 pa
Running some quick numbers
Projected size of Furness Academy intake at September 2009 1800 would attract a minimum of £8,802,000.
Size it is currently (a bit of a guesstimate as exact number isn't known) 1699 would attract a minimum of £8,308,110
So just four months in and the Academy has lost £493,890 in income from the DCSF aka the government aka the treasury aka the taxpayer.
No idea how this translates into staff numbers but how can the Academy company carry on paying all of its staff when it's income is down almost half a million pounds?
Playing a little fantasy numbers...
Let's say the Academy was at it's ideal playing weight of 1200 pupils which would attract £5,868,000.
So once the company has reduced its number of customers from 1800 to the 1200 ideal they would have £2,934,000 less to spend.
I for one had no idea that the schools have so much money available to them.
What this clearly shows is that the only way for the company to cover this shortfall in income is to employ fewer staff. I have tried to figure out an average teachers salary but the pay rates are so incredibly complex, more government obfuscation to ensure no-one else knows exactly if they are receiving the correct pay for the job they are doing, (see the PDF), that it wouldn't be a worthwhile exercise.
Still gives one food for thought doesn't it?

Given the fact alfs was a school facing challenging circumstances and thornies was a national challenge school the figure per pupil is much higher. Factor in the extra from substantial numbers of special needs kids, the split site school grand and extra academy funding and doug will have a pot bigger than his collar size!
