School appeals for volunteers to clear snow

A SCHOOL is appealing for volunteers to help clear snow and ice from its grounds.  Ulverston Victoria High School has been closed for four consecutive days due to health and safety reasons.
Bosses of the school want parents and the rest of the community to join staff at the school at 9.30am on Sunday to help shovel the ice and spread salt so the school can open safely on Monday.
The school, in Springfield Road, received a delivery of two tonnes of rock salt from Builders Supply Company Ulverston today.
Senior leaders would like volunteers to bring a shovel, and those who live nearby to bring wheelbarrows if possible.
The school said it cannot provide insurance cover for individual volunteers.

Why did it take so long to clear it? Why are parents and children OK to clear snow but staff/caretakers not, the previous week. It is a mad world.

Erm not really, I believe staff and site staff did clear paths on Wednesday (all day), unfortunately maybe willing volunteers couldn't give their time during the week last week, anyway I digress.

If you take the time to read their website (I have), it will tell you (or it did last week) that despite staff working like navvies all day (and in fact trying the same other days) there were several factors that made it impossible, including the fact that pic axes and what little grit was left by then, was having little if any effect, due to a, the amount of snow and ice, and b, the fact that no sooner was it cleared that it froze over again very quickly. Also the nature of the site meant there was huge swathes to clear, which in the end wasn't possible, despite staff working like trojans.

Decision taken to close until the weekend where the weather was meant to, and did, warm up, and troops could be mobilised to do a vastly better job (due to numbers of volunteers) and the small matter of getting hold of more salt (which is in very short supply all across the country), you only need to look at the amount of gritting NOT done in Barrow to see that.

Hope that helps

Thanks for clearing that up.
I am a willing volunteer should FA need its paths clearing in the future, I would be very peeved at school shutting for a week if all that was needed was volunteers to clear it....School Heads, for goodness sake just ask or as Derek says text us.
