'Grow Our Own 2 - Regeneration'

| 21 Comments | No TrackBacks
It's been a very quiet week Academy wise other than yet more evidence that it is struggling to implement the new way of carrying out their Duty of Care. The only other thing of note to emerge is the strong rumour that a certain vice-principal may well be going after the headship at Dowdales when Mrs Moffat retires. If Mr X' would care to knock this one on the head please contact me by e-mail at the usual address.

Vickerstown Junior school is going to be demolished and replaced with a state of the art 21st century primary learning environment otherwise known as a 'new school'. What this means for the other junior schools in it's vicinity is anyones guess because Moira isn't saying.
So that leaves us time to have a look at other 'Education Matters' such as the iconic Furness College new build,
Here it is, at least an artists impression of it.
facorporation.jpgIt's as iconic as the still two thirds empty Emlyn Hughes building on Abbey road but at least this one is going to be hidden away within the surrounding business park. Sadly for Channel side Walneyites they will be able to see it but at least it should look better than the existing from their view point.

It's costing an absolute fortune in excess of £35 million pounds and is replacing buildings that are just 17 years old and are no longer fit for purpose. Try as I might I have been unable to find out how much it cost to put these now doomed modern buildings up but no matter how much they cost they were obviously a waste of money given their short lifespan.
Still it's only the taxpayer who pays for these sorts of things and they are so good at handing over their taxes so there is no shortage of moolah to blow on such short termism.

So what is Grow Our Own 2-Regeneration ?

Well at first I though it was an allotment initiative from the Evening Mail seen as how it has it's nattily named clickin2 range of websites that no-one ever seems to use but no it was a beano for 'invited guests' to celebrate with heads of quangos who are channelling taxpayer funding into the college.
About the only good thing about it was the fact that the colleges catering students got some hands on experience by creating a three course meal for the assembled guests.
Of course the long suffering taxpayers footed the bill for the beano but no matter it was well received by the invited dignitaries.

Here is the Mails coverage of the event tastefully annotated in purple.

Furness College's iconic new building project, which was one of just 14 colleges to get funding from the Learning and Skills Council, is due to start at the end of the month.

Speaking at the college's 'Grow Our Own 2 - Regeneration' celebration on Wednesday, Bob Pointing, programme director of Barrow Regeneration, said: "I think the Learning and Skill Council's decision is probably the most the important thing to happen in Barrow for three years."
Wow it's even more important than BAE building Astute, BAE getting a few more subs to build and it is way more important than the Academy coming into being. Mr Pointing is head of a government quango and he is a serial regenerator so is expert at regenerating himself in a new role with another regeneration quango when his contract ends. West Lakes Renaissance should have been absorbed into Cumbria Vision but Mr Pointing argued for its continued existence and won so all it had to do was change it's name to Barrow Regeneration. Missed a trick there as it should have been called Furness Regeneration as we shall see. Read on.

Mr Pointing said education transforms lives, and he was pleased the LSC recognised the Channelside college's role in the regeneration of the town.
He said: "The college is very much involved in regeneration for Barrow, I would even say it is central to that."
Not that he will ever explain WHY it is central to regeneration. Problem as I see it is simple. No matter how great the college is at educating people once educated these people have to leave the area to find the work that pays a wage consummate with their level of education. Unless the county can attract companies that need these sorts of people then the 'brain drain' will carry on and will in fact speed up.
Especially if you buy Mrs Attwood's flawed argument that the Academy is necessary to address falling school rolls. If this really is true then it follows that the college will have far fewer students in the coming years so why does it need to re-invent itself?

Mr Pointing said the college had looked at its courses to give more training opportunities in sectors such as construction to meet the needs of regeneration projects like the £200m Waterfront masterplan, which will include 650 homes, a business park, cruise terminal, leisure facilities, nature reserve. Furness College's landmark new four-storey building will replace a series of metal workshops. Contractor Eric Wright Construction Ltd is moving on to the campus at the end of the month.
And where do all these newly trained contractors go when the waterfront masterplan is finished considering the fact that the construction industry has contracted in size month after month throughout 2009?

The LSC is contributing £32m, while the University of Cumbria will have a presence on the site through £3.5m from the Northwest Regional Development Agency.
So a University that is in debt and therefore broke is getting new facilities courtesy of a government quango simply because this quango and ergo the government believes that a university is essential to keep the young in Cumbria for longer.

Steven Broomhead, chief executive of the Northwest Regional Development Agency, said he was delighted 14 of the five colleges to receive LSC funding are in the North West.
Mr Broomhead is the head of a yet another government quango. There are so many of them it's unreal. David Cameron is going to make a lot of them redundant if he comes to power, allegedly. Lets hope that this is one promise he carries through, assuming he gets into Downing Street in May 2010.

He said: "They made a very sane and sensible decision by voting to give Furness College a new capital build. A greater thing could not have happened for the economy of the area."
He said he now wants to see more from the University of Cumbria about the way it is going to work at the college.
Good grief he is going to try and talk with Dr Neil Simco who is more elusive than the scarlet pimpernel. Best of luck Mr Broomhead. He was nowhere to be found when Anne, Dave, Moira and Ed were forcing through the Academy.

Mr Broomhead said Barrow has a very strong sense of purpose and is integral to the Energy Coast.
The Energy Coast is another soundbite scheme which is trying to put Cumbria on the map. All it consists of currently is a few dozen on shore wind farms and a few offshore versions along with plans for a brace of nuclear power stations and some madcap scheme to build a bridge across the bay on top of unproven tidal turbines. Not exactly awe inspiring but doubtless it'll drag in some 'government funding' courtesy of the quango population. Sorry to be cynical but this constant re-branding of different geographical parts of Cumbria is a pointless waste of taxpayers money.

Mr Broomhead said: "I see the peninsula has a strong aspiration for prosperity."
What the hell is this man on about?
What is a strong aspiration for prosperity and what exactly is the reason why he has come to this conclusion, if it is a conclusion at all.

Anne Attwood, principal and chief executive of Furness College, said she was proud when MP Phil Woolas, the regional minister for the north west, remarked on the college's important position at the centre of the regeneration of the town during his visit to the college in September.
She must be about the only person in the country who thinks Mr Woolas has the slightest clue what he spouts on about. Just recently Mr Woolas said: 'If this country and others were to withdraw their troops from Afghanistan and the Taliban were able to take control of Afghanistan our evidence is that the number of asylum seekers coming to the EU would significantly increase". The man is obviously an 'eejit'

Mrs Attwood said the college aims to be proactive in the social and economic regeneration of Furness, and be a hub for education and training in Furness.
What does she mean by being 'proactive' and social regeneration?
She came out with exact same argument to justify the Academy coming into existence. Some women recycle catwalk dresses Mrs Attwood obviously recycles her inane statements. It's worth pointing out that this lady doesn't actually live in Barrow, she doesn't actually live in Furness she commutes twice a day to and from the lovely South Lakeland village of Levens!

The event also saw the launch of Furness Training, a re-branding of Skills for Business.
I've never heard of Skills For Business and why is it being re-branded Furness Training?
Oh silly me it's yet another line blurring exercise. Furness Academy, Furness College, Furness Training all one and the same but with three different names it has three times the chances of attracting funding!

Guests enjoyed a three-course meal prepared and served by the college's catering and hospitality students.

UPDATE 11-00 am 11-11-09
Dr Simco has indeed left the building and is now working in Bonnies Scotland as K. Johnsons states. Link

Dean of Faculty of Business and Leisure

neil_simco.jpgAs Dean of Faculty, Dr Simco holds strategic responsibility for the development of the faculty's academic business. This responsibility is discharged in collaboration with academic partners. The faculty's academic business focuses on the academic portfolio of the faculty, approaches to learning and teaching and research and scholarship.

Dr Simco was formerly the dean of education and dean for research at the University of Cumbria, and prior to that worked from 1996 at the former St Martin's College, which became part of the new University of Cumbria two years ago.

Oh Lordy is that the rumour???? God help Dowdales! Lets hope whoever interviews will have the good sense to appoint a candidate of suitable calibre to continue the excellent work of Mrs Moffat otherwise we'll end up with another school heading for special measures.

Thorncliffe was run in Dowdales fashion due Mr Sinton and Mrs. Moffat's input for a year. Mr. Sinton did a great job when he was head at our school and when Mr. Wilson took up the reigns from Mr. Sinton things continued in much the same way.
However, Mrs. Moffat was singing the praises of Mr. Sinton in the Evening Mail, so assuming he applies, I doubt anyone else will get a look in.

The feeling in the school is that Mr Sinton will get the job.

What a relief!! Yes I have every faith in Mr Sinton as I know he did a great job at Thorncliffe and he does at Dowdales already as deputy. I'm sure that he will continue leading Dowdales superbly.
There is another possible option, could there be a return on the cards for Mr Fay?? I do hope so!

Well the grand plan has now been well and truly scuppered.
"Tens of thousands of training places could be axed under plans to claw back £340m from England's further education and skills budget.

A leaked government document suggests a proposal to axe at least 133,000 training places - some for the most deprived areas in the country."
On the BBC news website today.
Left hand, right hand and all that!!!!

don't think there's any chance of Mr Fay going back to dowies - he's enjoying himself too much at ulverston - can't say he's that popular there tho' from what I've heard...........

The chances are very slim of Mr Fay returning to Dowdales, not unthinkable, just very slim.

Mr Fay is a man of honour and integrity (from my past experiences), he's at UVHS to do a job, one thing he will do is see whatever role he has through, tbh there is still plenty to do at Ulverston.

Also not sure where the impression of unpopularity comes from, he is hugely respected at Ulverston, as an honest, hard working "lead from the front" leader, yes he doesn't pull any punches, but does anyone actually think Mr Fay would ever say one thing then do something else.....

Dr Neil Simco is not elusive, or a "scarlet pimpernel" - he is happy in his new role at a scottish university. (how in touch are you???)

Hi K Johnson
Obviously not as clued up as you thanks for that. Care to enlighten me as to who is the Simco replacement?
Derek

Come on Keith who is Simco's replacement?

K. Johnson. How on earth can us poor parents be kept in touch when Neil Simco, Anne Attward, Dave Kelly, the evil witch Swann and the totally inept Evening Mail have never communicated anything to the parents, pupils or community of Cumbria. Well that is one rat who has obviously left the sinking ship!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! - WHO'S NEXT

I am a teacher in the Academy and I can confirm we have a DCSF troubleshooter in at the moment (which you all know about). And also, 3 Cumbria County Council Education officials in. If you talk to Dougie, then this is quite normal for Academies - RUBBISH! Will it be 'quite normal for Academies' when we go into special measures. If you are an Academy in Cumbria it is!!!!!!!!!

I urge all concerned parents to contact OFSTED. This is the only way your children will get the Education they deserve from this Academy. They need to come in and see the mess - PLEASE!

Could Keith Johnson ***************************** please tell us poor saps who the hell has replaced Simco and why hasn't his departure been recorded on the Furness Academy web site?
MODERATED 09-12-2009

Do you really think the LA will allow ofsted to visit FA??? It won't matter how many parents phone the hot line deals will be done behind the scenes to keep them away. Be realistic how is it going to look for Cumbria with all the academies in either special measures or with a notice to improve, it just won't be allowed to happen. The sad thing is whilst the LA is busy protecting itself it's failing to safeguard and ensure the outcomes of our children. Where does this fit into the every child matters agenda??? Every child matters as long as they are ticking the boxes and meeting the targets set by the government and making the LA look efficient othewise every child doesn't matter at all. This is really scary!!

Sorry teacher, you're talking rubbish. We all know why the Headteacher from Ossett is in school, it is for advice/support. You are just mischief making and trying to scare parents.Think carefully before you start spreading rumours.

Actually we all don't know why thethree county council officials or the Headteacher from ossett are in school, when has the Academy management informed us of this? We are told nothing.I only know of this through reading this website. Why on earth does he need to be offering advice/support? We were assured that MR Blackledge was the man for the job and that everything was in place and. tickety boo for the successful opening in September -weren't you all ready to hit the ground with your feet running? I can understand the advice/support being at the end of a telephone line but to have someone "in" within weeks of the place opening is most alarming.I for one smell a rat.I don't believe for one minute that "teacher" is talking rubbish if things are running smoothly why would employees want to cause mischief and scare parents? What purpose does that serve? I'm sure "teacher" has better things to do with their time than think of what rumour to spread next. When ofsted do go in I think the Academy will at best receive a poor report and at worst will be in special measures - we'll just see shall we "in search of the truth".AS a concerned parentI might just drop ofsted a line

Dear In search of the truth
Why are YOU peddling such lies?
It isn't perfectly normal for a troubleshooter, for that is what Mr Shevill is, to be parachuted in at such an early stage of a new schools creation. Next time you see him stop him and ask him why he is here.

Nor is it usual to see three County Council Education officials inside an Academy. The Academy is totally independent from any sort of County Council control so the Academy has had to ASK for their help.

As in the creation process the only people who need to know why these four people are working within the Academy, the parents, are being kept totally in the dark.

If it wasn't for this site they wouldn't have a clue that any of them were in the school 'helping' Mr Blackledge and his team overcome something or other that is beyond their skill set.

Granted probably the majority of parents don't care as long as their little ones are given an 'education' but there is a growing number who do care and are getting more worried about what is really going on behind the scenes. If only the Evening Mail would get rid of it's sycophantic editor we might see some investigative journalism coming up with the answers but I am not holding my breath.

Sadly Ofsted are not the independent sharp tool many people seem to think they are.
They are wholly funded by the government and their head honcho is appointed by the government.
Even the most ignorant pleb in the country must be aware by now that Gordon Browns government is a control freak government.

Ofsted were told NOT to fail West Lakes Academy at it's last Ofsted inspection, read the report and then tell me it wasn't crafted by people being told do do something they didn't agree with.
Incidentally it shows how bad Richard Rose must be if even a chained Ofsted cannot bring itself to say it's out of special measures.
There is no way on earth that Walney or the Academy will be allowed to fail their Ofsted inspections. It's simply unacceptable to the DCSF and controller Balls.

But and it's a big but, Ofsted have been caught lying in a child abuse case involving Ms Shoesmith and baby P. The judge is livid to put it mildly and as thankfully the judiciary still has more clout in the courts than the ministers Ofsted is facing restructuring to make it truly independent from Controllor Balls.
The DCSF will really crap themselves as their tame watchdog will now be unleashed to report on things as they really are not as the DCSF say they are.
Interesting times ahead.

you are absolutely right Balls but I would still urge as many parents as possible to phone the ofsted hot line and complain about FA. If enough parents contact them surely they will have to at least look at the situation. They tried to keep ofsted away in Carlisle and it took a huge protest to get them there eventually. It is up to the parents and pupils to put the pressure on. This is Richard Rose all over again it's scandalous. It's no good complaining when your child has left year 11 having not met their potential due to the shambles that is FA.

Can you please give us the Ofstead hot line number. As you say the more people who ring the more they will have to do something, but not I fear until we have the same situation as Richard Rose with the pupils and parents protesting.
